CGRateS real-time charging & rating

When MagnusBilling is not enough — CGRateS is the carrier-grade, real-time charging engine for high-throughput operators, MVNOs, and platforms that need programmable rating at scale.

Real-Time Charging & Rating Engine

CGRateS (Carrier Grade RateS) is an enterprise-class, real-time charging and rating engine written in Go. It is built for operators and platforms that need to authorize, rate, and account for events — voice, SMS, data, or any usage — with sub-millisecond decisions and horizontal scale that a PHP-based biller cannot reach.

Where a tool like MagnusBilling suits many resellers, CGRateS is the right choice when you need real-time session authorization, multi-tenant rating, Diameter/Radius integration, or throughput measured in thousands of events per second. It is powerful and deeply modular — which is exactly why it needs to be architected, not just installed.

What we do

Our CGRateS engagement, in scope

Rating & account balances

RALs and rating plans configured for destination rates, time-based tariffs, and billing increments — plus monetary and non-monetary balances (minutes, SMS, data) for true multi-service prepaid and postpaid accounting.

Real-time session charging

SessionS wired to your switch — Asterisk (AMI/ARI), FreeSWITCH (ESL), Kamailio, or OpenSIPS — for authorization, prepaid balance debiting, and forced disconnect when funds run out, all in real time.

Least-cost routing & CDRs

RouteS-based least-cost and quality routing across carriers, plus CDRs with event readers (ERs) and exporters (CDRe) so rated records flow cleanly into your reporting, data warehouse, or downstream billing.

Diameter, Radius & integrations

AGENTS for Diameter (Gy/Ro online charging), Radius, and HTTP/JSON so CGRateS can slot into an existing OCS, BSS, or 3GPP-style architecture rather than living in isolation.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Architected CGRateS deployment (RALs, SessionS, CDRs, RouteS, AttributeS as scoped)
  • DataDB and StorDB configured on Redis and PostgreSQL/MySQL or MongoDB
  • Switch integration (Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, or OpenSIPS) tested end to end
  • Rating plans, balances, and routing validated against sample events
  • Horizontal-scale and failover notes, plus handover documentation
Who it's for

Typical clients

  • Carriers and MVNOs needing real-time online charging (OCS) at high throughput
  • Platforms rating multi-service usage — voice, SMS, and data — from one engine
  • Operators integrating rating with Diameter/Radius or an existing BSS/OCS stack

Responsible-use & compliance

CGRateS is deployed to rate and charge legitimate telecom and usage-based traffic. Clients remain solely responsible for holding any telecom licensing or regulatory registration their jurisdiction requires for carrying or reselling traffic.

Deployment options

Your server or a dedicated server from us

We can install and configure CGRateS on infrastructure you already own, or provide a fully managed dedicated server so you don't have to source hardware or a data center yourself.

Install on your own server

Already have a cloud VM or on-premise hardware? We deploy CGRateS straight onto your infrastructure — your cloud account, your VPS, or your own metal. You keep full ownership of the server, the data, and the credentials; we handle the build, hardening, and handover.

Dedicated server provided by us

Prefer a turnkey setup? We can provision a dedicated server sized for your call volume with CGRateS pre-installed, secured, and ready to run — plus optional ongoing management, monitoring, and backups so you have a single point of contact for the whole stack.

Not sure which fits? Compare managed hosting or tell us your requirements and we'll recommend the right deployment model.

In depth

Understanding CGRateS

What real-time online charging means

A traditional biller rates calls after they finish, reading CDRs and applying rates in batch. That is fine for many resellers, but it cannot stop a prepaid subscriber from overspending mid-session, and it cannot authorize usage in real time. CGRateS is an online charging system: it authorizes, rates, and debits balances during the event itself, with sub-millisecond decisions and forced disconnect when funds are exhausted.

For carriers, MVNOs, and platforms rating high volumes of voice, SMS, and data, that real-time control is not a luxury — it is the difference between charging accurately and carrying usage you can never collect on.

CGRateS architecture and horizontal scaling

CGRateS is built in Go as a set of modular subsystems — SessionS, RALs, CDRs, RouteS, AttributeS, and more — that can run together on one node or as distributed services behind DispatcherS. Backed by Redis for fast data and PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB for storage, it scales horizontally to the throughput your traffic demands rather than hitting the ceiling a single PHP-based biller runs into.

We architect the topology for your throughput and failover targets, because CGRateS rewards deliberate design and punishes a copy-pasted configuration.

Integrating CGRateS with your switch and core

CGRateS speaks the protocols your infrastructure already uses: agents for Diameter (Gy and Ro online charging), Radius, and HTTP/JSON let it slot into an existing OCS, BSS, or 3GPP-style architecture, while SessionS connects to Asterisk via AMI/ARI, to FreeSWITCH via the event socket, and to Kamailio or OpenSIPS. That means CGRateS becomes part of your stack rather than an island beside it.

We configure the agent and session logic for whichever switch you run, model monetary and non-monetary balances for true multi-service accounting, and wire CDR export into your reporting or data warehouse.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

MagnusBilling is a great fit for VoIP resellers who want an all-in-one web UI on top of Asterisk. CGRateS is the choice when you need real-time session authorization, very high throughput, multi-service balances, or Diameter/Radius integration. We help you pick during discovery rather than defaulting to one.
