The challenge

Their existing biller could rate voice after the fact, but it could not authorize sessions in real time, could not hold voice, SMS, and data balances in one account, and had no clean path to speak Diameter to the rest of their stack. Prepaid subscribers could overspend before a CDR was ever processed.

Our approach

1. 01Architected a CGRateS deployment with SessionS, RALs, CDRs, and RouteS running as distributed services behind DispatcherS for horizontal scale.
2. 02Modelled monetary and non-monetary balances so voice minutes, SMS, and data are rated and debited from one subscriber account.
3. 03Wired real-time session authorization to FreeSWITCH via the event socket, with forced disconnect when a prepaid balance is exhausted.
4. 04Configured a Diameter agent (Gy) so CGRateS performs online charging against their existing core, and set up CDR export into their reporting warehouse.

The outcome

The operator now authorizes and charges every session in real time across all three services, enforces prepaid balances instantly, and scales the charging tier horizontally as subscriber volume grows — on infrastructure that integrates with their existing Diameter core.
